Many families in Toba Tek Singh, Gojra, Kamalia, and nearby towns hear conflicting advice about surgery. Some of it is outdated. Some of it simply is not true. Below are common myths, paired with clearer facts, so you can ask better questions at your next OPD visit.
Myth 1: “All surgery means a large cut and a long hospital stay.”
Fact: Many procedures today use smaller keyhole (laparoscopic) cuts or focused laser techniques where they are suitable. Recovery and stay length depend on the condition, your health, and the plan your surgeon discusses with you. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
Myth 2: “Laser surgery is a miracle cure with zero pain and zero risk.”
Fact: Laser methods can help for selected perianal problems such as fissure, fistula, or pilonidal sinus when a surgeon judges them appropriate. They are still real operations. You still need proper assessment, consent, and after-care. No ethical surgeon promises “zero pain” or “zero risk.”
Myth 3: “If the pain comes and goes, I can safely ignore it forever.”
Fact: Intermittent pain does not always mean a problem is harmless. Gallstones, hernia, piles, and appendix issues can change over time. Waiting until you are in severe pain can make treatment harder. A calm OPD check is safer than guessing at home.
Myth 4: “Home remedies or pharmacy medicines alone will fix a surgical problem.”
Fact: Medicines and rest can ease symptoms for a while. They do not always correct the underlying issue when tissue, stones, or a hernia need a surgical plan. Use remedies only as advised, and get examined if symptoms keep returning.
Myth 5: “Any hospital or any surgeon is the same for every procedure.”
Fact: Experience with the specific procedure, clear counselling, and a setting that can support safe care all matter. Ask who will operate, what approach is planned, and what follow-up looks like. Clear answers build trust.
Myth 6: “Asking questions means I am delaying treatment.”
Fact: Good care includes informed consent. You should understand the diagnosis in plain words, the options, the benefits and risks, and the expected recovery. A second opinion is reasonable when you need more clarity.
When should you book an OPD visit?
Book if you have ongoing abdominal pain, a lump or bulge that grows with coughing, bleeding with stools, severe anal pain, jaundice with right-upper pain, or symptoms your GP has already flagged as possibly surgical. This post is education only. It is not a diagnosis.
