Pain that keeps returning
Abdominal pain that comes back for days or weeks, especially with nausea, vomiting, fever, or jaundice, deserves a proper check. Gallstones, appendix problems, and other surgical conditions can start mild and then change. Do not wait only for the worst day.
A lump or bulge that grows with coughing or standing
A soft bulge in the groin or abdomen that appears when you cough, lift, or stand may be a hernia. It may reduce when you lie down. Persistent bulges need assessment so you understand the options, including repair with mesh when appropriate.
Bleeding with stools or severe anal pain
Bright red bleeding, pain on passing stool, a tear-like pain, or swelling near the anus can relate to piles (haemorrhoids), fissure, fistula, or other perianal problems. Home remedies sometimes ease symptoms for a short time. Recurring or severe symptoms need an examination before anyone plans laser or other treatment.
Difficulty swallowing solid food, a growing neck lump, or breast changes
These are not always surgical, but they should not be ignored. A general surgeon can examine, advise tests, and refer when needed. Early review is safer than guessing from social media.
Wounds, abscesses, or infections that do not settle
Painful swelling with redness, fever, or discharge may need drainage or further care. Do not squeeze deep abscesses at home. Get assessed if swelling grows or you feel unwell.
Your family doctor already suggested a surgical opinion
If your GP or another doctor has asked you to see a surgeon for gallstones, hernia, piles, appendix, thyroid, breast, or varicose veins, book the OPD visit rather than delaying for weeks. Bring prior reports and a short list of questions.
When to seek urgent hospital care (not a routine OPD wait)
Go to emergency care for sudden severe abdominal pain, inability to pass stool or gas with vomiting, a hernia that becomes hard, very painful, and will not reduce, heavy bleeding, high fever with confusion, or chest pain and breathlessness. Those situations need immediate hospital assessment.
What happens at a surgical OPD visit?
You describe symptoms in plain words. The surgeon examines you, may request ultrasound or blood tests, and explains options: watchful waiting, medicines, or a procedure if needed. Good care includes informed consent: benefits, risks, and recovery explained before any operation.
